Non-destructive testing of surface hardening depth

Together with N-Dect GmbH, we have developed an innovative laser-based inspection system for the non-destructive determination of surface hardening depth in industrial components.

The solution is based on laser ultrasound technology and has been integrated into the industry-proven, flexible Flexitest inspection machine. The result is an industry-ready testing system at TRL 8 that determines the hardening depth of induction-hardened components within just a few minutes — without cutting or preparation and without destroying the test part.

Within just one week, a first demonstrator was built and presented during a live demonstration in Pretzfeld, where it generated significant interest among customers from automotive and energy industries.

The hardening depth can be measured at both axial and circumferential positions. This enables hardening processes to be set up, monitored and optimized more quickly. Conventional destructive testing methods involving cutting, grinding and analysis can be significantly reduced or even completely eliminated.

Benefits:
✅ significant reduction of hardening depth evaluation time
✅ much faster set up of your hardening process
✅ monitoring of your hardening process
✅ significant cost reduction
✅ no cutting -> no waste parts
