Chemical Analysis

Chemical Imaging

Chemical imaging using infrared, Raman, or terahertz spectroscopy enables non-contact and non-destructive visualization and characterization of chemical structures and interactions at the microscopic level.

This allows impurities and substances and their local distribution on a sample surface to be analyzed and characterized. Using spectroscopic tomography, our terahertz system can also detect and visualize certain substances (such as medications, explosives, drugs, etc.) beneath the sample surface.

Our extended HD - measurement service uses the O-PTIR mIRage system, a unique analysis device from Photothermal Spectroscopy Corp.. Based on a very broadband quantum cascade laser, both infrared and Raman spectra can be extracted simultaneously from the same measuring point with the highest spatial resolution without contact.

Possible applications:

  • Detection of contamination
  • Defect and error analysis
  • Analysis of multilayer films
  • Phase distribution in plastics
  • Microplastic analysis
  • Investigation of tissue sections, living cells, or bacteria
  • Investigation of pharmaceuticals
  • Investigation of safety-relevant substances
  • and many more...
Advantages over other analytical methods
  • Non-contact (label-free)
  • Non-destructive (sample reusable)
  • No/minimal sample preparation
  • Direct molecular information (HD - measurement service)
  • Compared to FTIR-technology 30 times higher spatial resolution (HD - measurement service)
  • Detection of particles as small as 100 nm (HD - measurement service)
  • Spatial resolution independent of wavelength (HD - measurement service)
  • No imaging artefacts (e.g., like at reflection spectra) (HD - measurement service)

Micro- & Nanoplastics Analysis

We investigate your sample for micro- and nanoplastics (MNP) without contact and without causing damage!

With our O-PTIR mIRage system, we can examine different materials for micro- & nanoplastics and determine particles from a minimum size of 100 nanometers. Send us your sample and receive a detailed breakdown of the chemical composition on the sample surface.

  • Materials: plastics, textiles, organic and inorganic substances, composite materials, etc.
  • Complex sample shapes from environmental samples to tissue samples/sections
  • No to minimal sample preparation
  • Maximum sample size 80 mm x 80 mm x 17 mm

Particle & Fiber Analysis

Similar to nano- and microplastics analysis, impurities, residues, or contaminants can be detected and chemically characterized locally on different material surfaces. Both the particle size (from 100 nm) and the particle distribution can be determined.

  • Applications in the textile and plastics industry, material development, smart textiles
  • Materials: plastics, textiles, organic and inorganic substances, composite materials, etc.
  • Maximum sample size 80 mm x 80 mm x 30 mm

Spectroscopic Histopathology

We can investigate and characterize medical samples such as tissue samples without contact and label-free using infrared and Raman spectroscopy. This provides you with a high-resolution image of the chemical composition of the sample and the distribution of individual macromolecules of interest (such as proteins).

Application examples:

  • Detection of drugs or metabolites in tissue
  • Examination of collagen orientation in individual fibrils and tendons
  • Characterization of deposits in tissue (e.g., calcium deposits)
  • Analysis of pathological tissue changes
  • Detection of nano- and microplastics

Analysis of Organic/Inorganic Samples

For rapid chemical characterization, your sample can also be analyzed point by point without imaging using infrared, Raman, or terahertz spectroscopy. Depending on the application, this can be done either in our laboratory or directly at your site. To this end, we have developed the MoBioS mobile sensor (see image on the right) in collaboration with FFoQSI and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, based on Raman spectroscopy technology, to detect and characterize biofilms and contaminants on various surfaces.

Application examples:

  • Material characterization
  • Detection and characterization of contamination
  • Detection of biofilms

Database Matching Service (Infrared/Raman)

Find your match! The characteristic spectrum in the (near) infrared or Raman range of your sample contains unique information ("chemical fingerprint") that can be used, for example, to detect and characterize the composition, impurities, contaminants, or individual particles on your sample. By comparing it with other, already known reference spectra of specific materials and substances, the bands and wavelengths occurring in the spectrum of your sample can be clearly assigned. This enables the chemical composition or characterization of individual particles in your sample to be clearly determined.

RECENDT has such a database for infrared and Raman spectra. To enable individual matching without having to purchase an expensive complete database, RECENDT offers a database matching service including chemometric analysis. Send us your spectra today and we will match and characterize them for you!
