iFLOWS will design, develop, integrate, test and validate a novel, multi-level, synergistic toolkit to improve information gathering, screening and detection of illicit materials and hazardous substances in courier and mail flows moving across EU borders and within the EU. On the technical side, novel scanning technologies are being developed. Sensors (i.e., THz scanners and UWB scanners) are planned that will detect a wide range of illicit materials and substances through improved detectability, which when combined with advanced image-based feature extraction in combination with conventional systems (e.g., X-ray and Raman) will optimize the detection process without disrupting existing mail/courier flows.

RECENDT's mission, in addition to consortium leadership, is to develop the THz scanners: by illuminating an object with THz waves, information about the chemical composition of hidden materials can be obtained without opening or damaging the object under investigation. These unique properties make the THz spectral range suitable for identifying, analysing and imaging a wide range of materials, such as explosives and drugs. RECENDT is therefore Work Package Leader for "WP 3: Upgrading scanning and detection capabilities of illicit material".
